Cardiologists Can Die of Heart Attacks, Too

Doctors spend many years after medical school training to be heart specialists, called cardiologists. Even after their formal education, they continue to apply the latest research to the care they give their patients. When they themselves suddenly die of a heart attack, it shows that the healthcare system needs to look beyond traditional screening methods to detect, diagnose, and treat heart disease before it becomes fatal.

Sudden cardiac death is the largest cause of natural death in the U.S. About 325,000 people a year die from it, about half of all deaths caused by heart disease.9 Around the world, 15-10% of all deaths can be attributed to sudden cardiac death.

Here are some world-famous cardiologists who were studying promising ways to treat heart disease and save lives, when they suddenly died of a sudden heart attack.
